Description
Leishmania (Leishmania):
Leishmania is found everywhere in the tropics and subtropics, as well as in Mediterranean areas.
Transmission occurs by the bite of a sand fly (mosquito).
There are 3 forms of Leishmaniasis:
- Internal (visceral form): Leishmania settles in organs. The causative agents of this form are: L. donovani, in Europe L. infanctum.
- Cutaneous: Leishmania only affects the skin. The pathogens are L. tropica major, L. tropica minor, L.tropica and L.aethiopica.
- Third form: Leishmania affects the skin in the area of the bite and mucous membranes. The causative agent is L. brasiliensis.
