Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a systemic infection caused by the human pathogenic TBE virus (Tick-borne Encephalitis Virus).
The TBE virus enters the tick bite directly through the tick's saliva into the skin of its victim.
Subsequently, from the bite site it penetrates into the nearest lymph nodes and from there into other organs such as, for example, connective tissue organs, skeletal muscles, myocardium, as well as into monocytes and phagocytes, where the virus multiplies extremely rapidly.
In the second viremic stage, TBE virus enters the central nervous system and can reach the brain.
