Description
Amyloid A-Protein im Serum (SAA) :
SAA is an acute-phase protein and is elevated in many inflammatory diseases. SAA rises earlier and more dramatically than CRP (C-reactive protein). Unlike CRP, SAA behaves similarly in both viral and bacterial infections. SAA levels increase very strongly in acute inflammation and can reach values 1000 times higher than normal. Moreover, SAA is an early marker of graft rejection, a possible marker of tumor activity and a clinically significant marker of bacterial and viral infection. Elevated SAA levels over a long period of time predispose to secondary amyloidosis, the extracellular accumulation of amyloid fibrils.
Serum amyloid A proteins are associated with various chronic inflammatory diseases, most commonly rheumatoid arthritis.
