Diamine oxidase DAO (Histamine Intolerance),
also known as histaminase, is an enzyme that plays a crucial role in the metabolism and regulation of histamine within the human body. DAO is the most important enzyme in the breakdown of histamine, especially in the intestine.
Function and Role — Histamine Degradation: DAO primarily breaks down histamine, a biogenic amine involved in immune responses, gastric acid secretion, and neurotransmission.
By degrading histamine, DAO helps to regulate and reduce histamine levels in the body, preventing excessive histamine buildup that can lead to symptoms of histamine intolerance.
Location: DAO is mainly found in the intestinal mucosa, kidneys, and placenta.
In the intestines, DAO is responsible for breaking down histamine derived from food.
Before blood, draw: Discontinue antihistamines one week before the blood sample is taken.
Patients do NOT need to be fasting.
